Recreating the Picture

The human arsenal has all sorts of elements at its disposal, and yet the greatest thing you are likely to find in there is our tendency to grow on a consistent basis. This tendency, in particular, has allowed us to hit upon some huge milestones, with technology appearing as a unique member of the stated squad. Talk about why technology’s credentials are so anomalous, the answer to that is largely predicated upon its skill-set, which wasted no time in ushering us towards a much better reality. Nevertheless, if we were to take up a slightly closer look, it will become clear how the whole runner was also very much inspired by the way we applied those skills across a real-world setting. The latter component was, in fact, what gave the creation a spectrum-wide presence, and consequentially, kickstarted a tech revolution. This revolution will, of course, go on to scale up the human experience from every conceivable direction, but after realizing such a historical feat, technology will somehow continue bringing all the right goods to the table. This has only turned more and more evident over the recent past, and truth be told, a newly-formed partnership should do a lot to keep that trend well and truly alive.

The stock image giant Shutterstock has officially partnered with OpenAI to integrate the latter’s DALL-E 2 AI generator into its platform. Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first piece of collaboration between the two organizations, as they teamed up back in 2021 and created a tangent where Shutterstock would sell images and metadata to OpenAI for training the DALL-E model in the first place. Now, with Shutterstock venturing into AI-generated images, every artist whose work was used to actually build up the system, along with many others, will have to compete against it. This has unsurprisingly created some serious outrage among creators, so to navigate through these tricky waters; Shutterstock has launched an all-new Contributor Fund. As per certain reports, the stated fund will basically pay creators every time the content they uploaded on Shutterstock is sold to other companies, such as OpenAI, marking the first major initiative by a platform holder to reimburse creators in such a way.

“Given the collective nature of generative content, we developed a revenue share compensation model where contributors whose content was involved in training generative models will receive a share of the earnings from datasets and downloads of all AI-generated content produced on our platform,” said a Shutterstock spokesperson.Contributors will receive a share of the entire contract value paid by platform partners. The share individual contributors receive will be proportionate to the volume of their content and metadata that is included in the purchased datasets.”

AI art generators have been dominating discussions for a while now, and honestly, not in a good way. For instance, companies like Getty Images have even banned the sale of AI art just because its inability to copyright the output of these systems might result in licensing problems for customers. Shutterstock is set to take a somewhat similar decision by banning third parties from uploading AI generated content on its platform, but it is mainly doing so to increase traffic towards the newly-added DALL-E integration.
