Another Sensational Breach in the Books

If you really dig into the human skill-set, you’ll see how each part of it is just outright unique. However, despite the whole unprecedented nature, it still suffers from glaring shortcomings, and sometimes, these shortcomings have notably proven to be dangerous beyond all limits. Hence, to better protect ourselves against the risk in play here, we would develop some intelligible avenues along the way. While all these avenues gave us one great thing or the other, none of them were able to deliver what technology did. Technology appears as such a standout due to reasons that are bigger than the usual estimation. For instance, the creation’s success isn’t just down to the way it made everything more guided, but it is also a by-product of how technology achieved the said reality within so many different areas. This will eventually trigger a complete makeover in regards to our identity as individuals, and as a society. Nevertheless, it’s not to say that all the human weaknesses were suddenly remedied. They’ll just take up a different shape, with their strongest iteration coming in the form of our struggle around cybersecurity. Cybersecurity issues have been plaguing the world for a while now. In fact, they have only made us more and more vulnerable over time. With the world failing to put an end to these system breaches, hack attacks and other related stuff, we have reached a very sensitive stage in technology’s journey, and when you are at such a crucial point, cases like the one of Cash App’s breach don’t help at all.

As revealed by its developer, Block, Cash App recently suffered a massive data breach, which was discovered some time after a former employee downloaded personal information of over 8.2 million users. According to certain reports, the stolen data included stuff like full names, brokerage account numbers, brokerage portfolio value, brokerage portfolio holdings, and reports of stock trading activity. Interestingly enough, the breach’s impact is said to be limited to the customers who used Cash App’s stock function. Furthermore, the investigations so far have also revealed that no user outside the US was affected.

In an attempt to curb the potential damage, Block is now contacting all the impacted users to make them aware of the situation. The company has already reached out to relevant law enforcement agencies, while also continuing with its own investigations into the incident.

“At Cash App we value customer trust and are committed to the security of customers’ information,” said Danika Owsley, a spokesperson for Cash App. “Upon discovery, we took steps to remediate this issue and launched an investigation with the help of a leading forensics firm. In addition, we continue to review and strengthen administrative and technical safeguards to protect information.”
