Closing the Digital Divide

A human life revolves around many factors, but most notably, it revolves around the principle of constant progression. You see, as human beings, we try to grow on a rather consistent basis, and by doing so, we give ourselves a prime shot at achieving some significant milestones. However, if we take a second and assess these milestones in hindsight, we’ll quickly realize how none of them match up with technology. Technology gets to be the ultimate winner here for reasons that touch upon some hugely different elements. To start us off, we focus on the creation’s unprecedented skill-set, but hold on, there is more. In case these ingenious capabilities weren’t enough, technology was also able to use them for scaling up our entire spectrum. Such a dynamic expectantly guided us towards a whole new reality, a reality which was nothing like we had experienced before. Nevertheless, even after achieving so much, we’ll continue finding ways to enhance the application of technology in our lives, and Biden administration’s latest partnership is another step in that very direction.

Biden administration has officially announced partnership with 20 broadband providers, including big names like AT&T, Comcast, Frontier, Spectrum, and Verizon. As per certain reports, the partnership is largely focused on improving the companies’ subsidized high-speed internet plans that they have made available to low-income citizens. These improvements can be made either around the quality of service or through further price reductions. From an overall standpoint, the move provides an interesting follow-up to FCC’s recently-launched Affordable Connectivity Program, which is pretty much designed to subsidize the cost of internet service with grant funding worth $30. Hence, apart from easing the financial burden, the new partnership can also effectively make internet access free in some cases, where the new price ends up falling just around $30. Nevertheless, the plan still remains a profitable model for the providers, as it promises to bring them new customers moving forward.

While announcing the partnership, President Biden linked it with the country’s broader fight against inflation.

“The bottom line is this — my top priority is fighting inflation and lowering prices for families on things they need,” he said. “Today’s announcement is gonna give millions of families … a little more breathing room to help them pay their bills. We worked with Democrats and Republicans, with businesses and nonprofits, to make this happen, and we’re going to keep working to fight inflation and lower cost of all American families, and a lot of other things as well.”

In a bid to give this program the best possible chance at success, US government will also launch a dedicated GetInternet.gov website, which will help qualified participants in signing up and finding the right internet provider. Notably, the citizens who already receive various benefits like the Pell Grant, Medicaid or SNAP, qualify for the subsidy.
