It Lives to See Another Day

The human arsenal might be as expansive as one could possibly imagine, but it still doesn’t have anything more valuable than that tendency of ours to grow on a consistent basis. This tendency, in particular, has already fetched us some huge milestones, with technology appearing as a rather unique proponent of the stated group. The main reason why technology’s credentials are so anomalous is based on its skill-set, which was unprecedented enough to guide us towards a reality that nobody could have ever imagined otherwise. Nevertheless, if we take up a slightly closer look, it should become clear how the whole runner was also very much inspired by the way we applied those skills across a real-world environment. The latter component was, in fact, what gave the creation a spectrum-wide presence, and consequentially, kickstarted a tech revolution. This revolution, as we discovered, will go on to scale up the human experience from every conceivable direction, but even after achieving such a monumental feat, technology will somehow continue to bring all the right goods to the table. The same has turned more and more evident over the recent past, and truth be told, a newly-awarded grant might just do a lot to make that trend bigger and better moving forward.

In a surprising turn of events, The US Department of Energy has formally awarded California’s Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant a grant worth $1.1 billion, making it the first power plant to be awarded credits from Biden Administration’s Civil Nuclear Credit program. The Civil Nuclear Credit program is something pretty much designed to extend the lives of reactors in danger of closing down, and in case you have been keeping up, the two nuclear reactors at Diablo Canyon were slated to be decommissioned one by one in 2024 and 2025, when their operating licenses expire. However, despite all the controversy, Diablo Canyon has been consistently providing the state of California with 15 percent of its carbon dioxide pollution-free energy. From a broader standpoint, nuclear energy accounts for 50 percent of the US’s carbon-free electricity, and as a result, it remains an integral piece of Biden administration’s plan to run the grid on 100 percent clean power.

“This is a critical step toward ensuring that our domestic nuclear fleet will continue providing reliable and affordable power to Americans as the nation’s largest source of clean electricity,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said in a statement. “Nuclear energy will help us meet President Biden’s climate goals, and with these historic investments in clean energy, we can protect these facilities and the communities they serve,”

Interestingly, the DOE grant adds to another $1.4 billion loan PG&E, the utility that operates Diablo Canyon, got from California during the September 2022 heatwave. The role it played in helping the state navigate through that tough period would significantly bolster Diablo Canyon’s prospects, but with all negatives still unaddressed, the plant’s future continued to hang in balance. To give you an example on these proverbial negatives, many critics have questioned its lack of plan in regards to safely storing the nuclear waste. Apart from it, various residents who live near the plant have also raised concerns about the danger it poses during earthquakes, considering how close it is to the seismic fault lines.

Another detail worth mentioning about the grant is its conditional nature. This translates to funding would be awarded incrementally over several years based on actual costs accrued by the plant. All in all, though, given the timing of the grant and everything that preceded it, it has be what makes or breaks Diablo Canyon.
