Markforged Acquires Digital Metal for $40 Million; Plans to Scale up Additive Manufacturing Operation

There are many different things that help human beings in standing out from the rest, but if we are being honest, nothing does it quite like our ability to scale up on a consistent basis. You see, when someone can grow under every possible situation, it does a lot to guide them towards some notable milestones along the way. The same is proven by everything we have achieved so far, with one big piece of testimony coming from an idea called technology. Even though technology arrived on the scene amidst a lot of scepticism, it would go on to become a huge element in our lives, and mind you, it won’t be just because of its ingenious skill-set. Instead, the reason here also revolved a great deal around how the creation used those skills to impact an entire spectrum. Nevertheless, despite making us a tech-driven society from top to bottom, technology will continue to scale things up under capacity or the other. In fact, a recent acquisition should only make this trend stronger moving forward.

Markforged, creator of the integrated metal and carbon fiber additive manufacturing platform, The Digital Forge, has officially acquired Digital Metal in a deal worth around $40 million to million. Breaking down the final figure, Markforged will fork out $32 million in cash, while clearing up the remaining amount with 4.1 million shares of the company’s common stock, which is valued, as of today, at $1.9 per share. According to certain reports, the purchase will allow Markforged to facilitate a deeper push into additive manufacturing for industrial customers. On a granular level, this translates to a capability of producing functional metal parts in extremely high-volumes, therefore making it easier for the company’s customers to scale up beyond their existing boundaries. Talk about why Markforged chose Digital Metal, the latter’s proprietary binder jetting AM technology is well-known for achieving high productivity, excellent surface quality, and superior resolution. So far, it has already been used to produce parts of very unique nature, including consumer products, academia, automotive industry, and more. Markforged hopes to build upon this versatility by using an integrated software setup and a global go-to-market engine.

“With the Digital Metal acquisition, Markforged is advancing our vision for distributed manufacturing by enabling the reliable, high-volume production of precise metal parts at the point of need. Infusing Digital Metal’s solution into The Digital Forge platform allows us to address new applications in the medical, automotive, luxury goods and other industries,” said Shai Terem, president and CEO of Markforged. “The Digital Metal team has created a robust and scalable solution that complements our existing technologies. I look forward to welcoming their talented people to Markforged.”
