A Sand Grain Attempt to Save the World

As discouraging as it sounds, every good experience of ours comes at a cost. Now, at times the cost might be too minimal for you to notice, but it’s still there nonetheless. There is no scarcity of examples in this regard; however, the one that rings true on a societal level has to be about our progression over the last few years. The kind of leaps we have made in the recent times is hard to comprehend for someone who didn’t live through all of it, and that sense of bewilderment is actually fair. After all, every piece of it looks to be within a touching distance of some made up story. Nevertheless, it has been a true reality, and for that the credit must go to technology. Our transition into a tech-centric world happened for all the right reasons. The benefits to be had out of it were just too good to ignore, but while we revelled in the genius of technology, we were also simultaneously paying a hefty price for it, and we did that without even having any knowledge for a good deal of time. As it turned out, technology’s transformative qualities were not enough to stop it from setting up situations that had a negative impact on our environment. Furthermore, with the creation preaching universality across the board, it only allowed such activities to swell up more and more. Due to this, we are now in a state of emergency, and measures are finally being taken to control the damage. The latest measure appears in a novel representation of technology, thus signalling that despite everything, we are confident in its potential to make a difference.

Researchers at Northwest University have prepared a winged microchip that will do the work of tracking air pollution levels at a given time. The microchip is no bigger than a sand grain; hence it’s said to have a claim at being the smallest flying device ever made. Apart from pollution tracking, the device can also discern harmful pathogens in the air that can possibly turn into serious diseases. In a world that is still reeling from its fight against Covid 19, something like this could prove to be a major reinforcement for similar situations in the future. These microchips can be made through biodegradable material as well, so any question of additional environment contamination is automatically ruled out.

While the microchip is at the size of a seed, it’s still given enough space to carry all the necessary electronics, sensors, and power sources. These sensors are put on-board to gauge things like air acidity, water quality, and solar radiation. Even though the concept sounds wholly promising, the developing team has insisted that they’ll be looking to make the device more refined before putting it out there for the world to see.
