The Hidden Price of Convenience

Even though we might not have been totally convinced by technology’s potential at the beginning, the lure of all what it promised kept that small flicker of hope up and alive. Over the course of time, we will be able to match the desire of those tech tools with concrete knowledge about how to extract their best, and once we do that, there will be no looking back. The world of technology would scale up from being a mere additive alongside our existing setup to a core piece that will demand everything to be built around it. Going all in on this layered creation certainly looked like a risky bet, but the results will show up pretty soon, and they will land well beyond our expectations. However, this unprecedented experience will come at a big cost. With the idea of technology largely influenced by greater accessibility, it didn’t just open the gates to simplify general tasks, but it also opened up a channel for hackers to affect you in whatever way they want. This vulnerability that comes with technology always sticks out like a sore thumb in every tech-related discussion. We did make some strides to curb the risk of attacks, but all in all, our advancements haven’t amounted to a robust and sustainable solution. If anything, we are becoming a target for these threat actors through only more shrewd and devastating ways. To get a grip of it, we just have to look at what happened with Twitch recently.

Amazon’s streaming arm, Twitch has confirmed that the platform was hit with a massive security breach. According to the reports that have emerged so far, sensitive information like platform’s source code, official figures of creators’ payouts, and structural details about an unreleased product that was to rival popular gaming platform, Steam, was stolen. The anonymous hacker who did it had gone ahead and posted the information on 4chan message board as 125GB torrent file. Since then, the legitimacy of that posted data has been validated by a company source.

After winning over the gaming community, Twitch has now entered many new niches, thus cementing itself as a true streaming giant. Currently, the platform boasts around 2.5 million active users at any given time, but despite the great numbers, things have been relatively hard for Twitch even before the breach. The company has come under extreme scrutiny for not taking any action in response to incessant hate and harassment cases appearing on its platform. Hence, it remains to be seen how the streaming services provider juggles everything moving forward.
